Reilly Opelka stunned 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic with a dominant 7-6 (6), 6-3 victory in the quarterfinals of the Brisbane International on Friday. The American served up 16 aces, including a powerful one to close out each set, securing one of the most significant wins of his career.
Opelka said after the match that he focused on his spots. “If I hit them, it’s hard to get them back. If there’s anyone who can, it’s him.”
For Djokovic, 37, the loss marked a challenging start to his 2025 season. It was his first tournament of the year as he prepares for the Australian Open, which begins on January 12, a tournament he has won a record 10 times.
Despite the defeat, Djokovic’s experience was clear, with Opelka acknowledging the challenge of facing a player widely regarded as the greatest of all time. “We have nothing to lose coming in against him,” Opelka added. “You play more freely, take more risks, and if you’re playing at your best, it can be a tough day for him.”
Djokovic’s preparation for Melbourne is expected to be further shaped by new coach Andy Murray, who will join him for the Australian Open.
Opelka, who reached a career-high ranking of No. 17 in 2022, has battled back from a significant injury. After undergoing hip surgery to remove a benign tumor, the American’s ranking dropped to No. 293. Reflecting on his recovery, he noted, “It was tough. A lot of uncertainty, a lot of doubt.”
In the semifinals, Opelka will face Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, who triumphed over Jakub Mensik with a 7-5, 7-6 (5) win. The other semifinal will feature Jiri Lehecka, who defeated Nicolas Jarry 6-4, 6-4, and Grigor Dimitrov, who advanced after Jordan Thompson retired during their match with Dimitrov leading 6-1, 2-1.
