Nick Kyrgios Hints at Retirement After Early Australian Open Defeat

Nick Kyrgios has suggested that his singles career at the Australian Open may be coming to an end following his first-round loss to British player Jacob Fearnley on Monday.

The 29-year-old Australian, who has battled recurring injuries in recent months, was defeated in straight sets by Fearnley. Despite his struggles, Nick Kyrgios admitted he was far from his best, claiming he played at just 65% of his usual capacity.

“I went out there, I would say 65% of my capacity,” Kyrgios told reporters after the match. “For [the fans] to really see me fighting and still giving me that energy, it meant a lot, because I feel like I’ve given my life to tennis and I’ve tried to give them a show every time I go out there.”

While he acknowledged the crowd’s support, Kyrgios was candid about his future in the tournament, stating,

“Realistically, I can’t see myself playing a singles match here again.”

Despite the early exit, Kyrgios, who is scheduled to compete in the doubles draw alongside fellow Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis, expressed no regrets about his career or his involvement in the Australian Open.

“My journey is not over, but I’ve had an amazing journey. My career’s been amazing,” he reflected. “I continue to try and have fun, just be real, and enjoy the ride. But I think it would be selfish for me to say that I want more. I’ve had a lot of success. More than most athletes would have.”

As Kyrgios contemplates his future in the sport, his openness about his career and legacy provides a glimpse into the mindset of one of tennis’ most charismatic yet unpredictable stars.
