January 13, 2025 – Defending champion Jannik Sinner began his Australian Open 2025 title defense with a determined straight-sets win on Monday, as Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff also advanced to the second round in impressive fashion.
Sinner, who faced scrutiny after two positive steroid tests in March, denied any wrongdoing and tennis authorities cleared him, although the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has appealed for a potential two-year ban. The crowd on Rod Laver Arena warmly welcomed the Italian world number one, who delivered a 7-6 (7/2), 7-6 (7/5), 6-1 victory over Chile’s Nicolas Jarry.
“Today it was a close one because in the first sets it could have gone both ways,” Sinner commented. “But I’m happy to get through and look forward to the next round.”
Coco Gauff Powers Through to Round Two

Coco Gauff made light work of 2020 champion Sofia Kenin, winning 6-3, 6-3 in a solid performance on Rod Laver Arena. Despite an early setback with an early break of serve, Gauff, seeded third, quickly found her rhythm and took control of the match, finishing with 12 aces and saving seven of the eight breakpoints she faced.
“I knew it was going to be difficult, but I’m happy with how I played,” said Gauff, who wore a Marvel-inspired outfit for her Australian Open debut. “I could serve better, but I struggled to see the ball because of the sun. Still, I’m glad I managed to push through.”
Gauff’s confidence has been high after winning the WTA Finals in November and helping the U.S. win the United Cup. She will next face Britain’s Jodie Burrage in round two.
Iga Swiatek Overcomes Early Struggles

Iga Swiatek, the world number two, also advanced with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Katerina Siniakova, though it wasn’t entirely smooth sailing. Swiatek faced resistance from the Czech player, a doubles specialist, and struggled at times to find her usual rhythm.
“For sure it wasn’t an easy first round, so I’m happy I got through,” Swiatek said. “She played really well, and I knew I had to be proactive to get through.”
Swiatek, who could return to the world number one ranking depending on the outcomes of other matches, is aiming to claim her first Australian Open title to add to her impressive collection of five Grand Slam titles. She will face Slovakia’s Rebecca Sramkova in the second round.
Setbacks and Surprises
The tournament saw an early shock as former finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas became the first major casualty, falling to American Alex Michelsen, ranked 42 in the world. Tsitsipas’ early exit is one of the unexpected developments from the tournament’s opening days.
Novak Djokovic will begin his pursuit of a record-breaking Grand Slam later today, while Carlos Alcaraz is also competing.
With more action expected throughout the day, the Australian Open 2025 is already delivering plenty of excitement.
