Emma Raducanu’s journey at the 2025 Australian Open came to an end in the third round with a commanding 6-1, 6-0 loss to world number two Iga Swiatek on Saturday. Despite the tough defeat, the British star expressed optimism, highlighting her return to fitness and competitive form after a challenging period marred by injuries.
The 22-year-old has struggled to maintain momentum since her historic 2021 U.S. Open victory due to recurring fitness setbacks. Last year, Raducanu missed five events during the WTA Asian swing after a ligament sprain in her foot. Entering the new season, a back issue forced her to withdraw from a tune-up event in Auckland. However, she impressed at Melbourne Park, securing victories against 26th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova and former French Open semi-finalist Amanda Anisimova.
Facing Swiatek, a five-time Grand Slam champion, proved to be a different challenge entirely. While Raducanu managed just one game in the match, she focused on the positives from her first tournament appearance since mid-November.
“Three weeks ago, I was doing pool rehab in Auckland,” Raducanu reflected during her post-match press conference. “To now be on court playing matches and competing at this level is something I’m truly grateful for. I only started hitting 18 days ago when I arrived here, so to have beaten two top players in the first two rounds is a huge positive.”

Acknowledging Swiatek’s dominant performance, Raducanu admitted she struggled to find her rhythm. “No excuses about my back or physical condition today. I didn’t play well, and she played extremely well. But I’ve taken a lot of feedback from this experience and know what I need to work on.”
Raducanu pinpointed her serve as a key area for improvement after being broken five times by Swiatek. “The first two matches, I was able to rely on my movement and defense against strong opponents, but my serve needs to get better,” she explained. “I’ll look back at this tournament and recognize it as a learning experience. My goal is to find more consistency in 2025.”
Despite the early exit, Raducanu’s return to fitness and her competitive performances in the opening rounds provide a promising foundation for the season ahead. Fans will undoubtedly hope this marks the beginning of a stronger, more consistent chapter in the young star’s career.
