Arthur Fils Overcomes Jakub Mensik in Jeddah with Bravado at Key Moments

Arthur Fils made a strong recovery from a challenging start at the 2024 Next Gen ATP Finals in Jeddah, securing a confident 4-2, 4-3(4), 4-2 victory over Jakub Mensik on Thursday.

The Frenchman, the top seed at the 20-and-under event, displayed resilience and composure, particularly in crucial moments, to overcome Mensik in 77 minutes. Arthur Fils, who reached the final in Jeddah last year, won four out of five deciding deuce points in a match where mental toughness was key.

After a tough loss to Joao Fonseca in a five-set battle on Wednesday, Fils acknowledged the challenge of bouncing back. “Yesterday was a bit tough,” he said in his on-court interview. “But I’m really happy with the way I dealt with the match today. It was against a really good opponent. He had an unbelievable year, and I wish him all the best for the next year.”

Fils, ranked No. 20 in the ATP rankings, proved his skill with sharp returning that blunted Mensik’s big serve. He converted three out of seven break points, improving his record to 10-2 against Top 50 players since September.

The 20-year-old Frenchman, who has claimed ATP 500 titles in Hamburg and Tokyo this year, is now 38-27 for 2024-season. Looking ahead, Fils will face Learner Tien in his final group match on Friday. Mensik will look for his first win of the week against Fonseca.

“I’m used to being the youngest one,” said Fils, reflecting on his position as one of older players in tournament. “But I like to be in this place, and it’s good to play in these conditions. It will help me for next year.”

Fils’ victory in Jeddah marks another step in his continued rise in the ATP rankings, showcasing both his maturity and ability to handle pressure in high-stakes moments.
