India’s Rohan Bopanna and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden reached the round of 16 in men’s doubles. They won in straight sets against Roberto Carballes Baena and Federico Coria. The match ended 6-2, 6-4 in just 60 minutes. It took place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Bopanna and Ebden, the second seeds, began strongly, breaking their opponents’ serve in the first game of the opening set and again in the fifth game. They maintained their service games to take the first set comfortably. In the second set, Baena and Coria were more competitive but faltered with a break point in the seventh game. Bopanna and Ebden capitalized on this opportunity, securing two more games to clinch the match.
The Indo-Australian duo, who won gold in men’s doubles at the Paris 2024 Olympics, will now face the Argentine pair of Andres Molteni and Maximo Gonzalez in their next match.
In mixed doubles, Bopanna and his partner Aldila Sutjiadi of Indonesia won their first-round match, defeating the Dutch-German team of Demi Schuurs and Tim Putz 7-6, 7-6. The match was tightly contested, with Bopanna and Sutjiadi winning both tiebreakers 9-7 and 7-5, respectively. They will play against Australia’s John Peers and Czech Republic’s Katerina Siniakova in the round of 16.
In other matches, N Sriram Balaji and his Argentinian partner Guido Andreozzi lost in the second round. They were defeated by the eighth-seeded pair of Michael Venus and Neal Skupski. Meanwhile, Yuki Bhambri and his French partner Albano Olivetti secured a victory over the 15th-seeded Austin Krajicek and Jean-Julien Rojer. After losing the first set, they came back to win 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. Consequently, they have advanced to the round of 16 and are now awaiting their next opponents.
