Men’s Singles Highlights

Novak Djokovic, a seasoned Olympian, continued his pursuit of an elusive gold medal with a hard-fought victory. The Serbian star battled through a tough first set before dominating the second to win 7-6(5), 6-1. Djokovic, a three-time quarter-finalist at the Olympics, is determined to add the gold to his impressive collection of 24 Grand Slam titles. In the women’s draw, top seed Iga Swiatek continued her impressive form with a victory over American Danielle Collins. Despite a tough three-set match that ended 6-1, 2-6, 4-1 (ret.), Swiatek is now two wins away from securing the Olympic title, which would complement her four French Open and one US Open titles. She will face Zheng Qinwen of China in the semi-finals.

Zheng Qinwen reached her first Olympic singles semi-final after a dramatic 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 win over Angelique Kerber. Zheng, following the legacy of her hero Li Na, becomes the second Chinese player to reach this stage of the Olympics. With Li Na having previously reached the bronze-medal match in Beijing 2008.

In another standout performance, Anna Karolina Schmiedlova made headlines by defeating 2024 Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejčíková 6-4, 6-2. Schmiedlova’s victory marks the first time a Slovakian has reached the Olympic semi-finals since Miloslav Mecir’s men’s singles gold in Seoul 1988.
