Novak Djokovic secured gold in the men’s singles tennis final at the Paris 2024 Olympics with a straight-sets victory over Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz at Roland Garros on Sunday. At 37 years old, Djokovic claimed his first Olympic singles title in a gripping final held on Court Philippe Chatrier.
The match was a rematch of their Wimbledon 2024 final, where Alcaraz had defeated Novak Djokovic in straight sets. However, in Paris, Djokovic displayed resilience, saving five break points late in the first set to push it to a tiebreak. He won the tiebreak with four consecutive points.
In the second set, Novak Djokovic intensified his performance, winning his serve games consistently and finishing strong in another tiebreak with a powerful forehand winner down the line. After the final point, Djokovic celebrated by roaring to the sky, then fell to his knees in the center of the court before joyfully joining his family and team in the stands.
Alcaraz, who had hoped to add an Olympic gold to his French Open and Wimbledon titles, was visibly emotional after the match. Djokovic’s victory makes him the fifth player, joining Steffi Graf, Andre Agassi, Rafael Nadal, and Serena Williams, to achieve a Career Golden Slam, having won all four Grand Slam titles and Olympic gold. Additionally, Novak Djokovic is now the oldest man to win the Olympic singles gold since tennis returned to the Olympics in 1988.
