Italy Defeat Poland to Reach Consecutive Billie Jean King Cup Final

Italy advanced to their second consecutive Billie Jean King Cup final with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Iga Świątek’s Poland on Monday in Málaga.

In an intense encounter, Świątek came from a set down to defeat Jasmine Paolini in the second singles match, but Italy responded immediately in the deciding doubles rubber. Paolini, alongside veteran Sara Errani, triumphed 7-5, 7-5 over Świątek and Katarzyna Kawa, sending Italy into Wednesday’s final.

The match began with Lucia Bronzetti giving Italy the lead by dispatching Magda Linette 6-4, 7-6 (7/3) in the opening singles. The match then shifted to Świątek’s thrilling three-set victory over Paolini, which lasted over two and a half hours.

“I was a bit tired, but I told myself I had to give everything for Italy and the team,” said Paolini after her loss. “When I lost my singles match, I felt disappointed, but I tried to stay positive for the doubles.”

In the first singles rubber, Bronzetti, ranked 78th, faced off against world number 38 Linette. The Italian made a strong start, winning the first set 6-4. Though Linette fought back in the second, leveling the set at 4-4, Bronzetti eventually clinched the win in a tiebreak, after Linette’s return sailed into the net on match point.

The pressure then fell to Świątek, and the world number two responded in thrilling fashion in her singles battle with Paolini. After a dominant win over Paolini in the French Open final earlier this year, Świątek faced a much tougher challenge in Málaga. Paolini took the first set, but Świątek forced a third set with a solid performance in the second, saving break points and showing resilience.

Paolini, determined to break her previous losing streak against Świątek, fought hard, but eventually, the Polish star edged out her opponent in the third set, overcoming the Italian’s challenge with a decisive break.

“I was exhausted in the second set, but I managed to find the energy to finish strong,” Świątek said after her win, acknowledging that she had “no time to celebrate” as the job wasn’t done yet.

With the tie level at 1-1, the match moved to the deciding doubles, where Paolini and Errani came from behind to win the first set. After an early deficit in the second set, Italy mounted an extraordinary comeback, winning six straight games to seal the victory.

“It was a long day, and I didn’t start the doubles well, but I found my way back into the match,” said Errani. Who closed out the match with an underarm serve—a tactic she’s known for in tense moments.

Italy’s victory sets up a showdown with the winner of the second semi-final between Great Britain and Slovakia on Tuesday, as they bid for their fifth Billie Jean King Cup title.
