Defending champion Coco Gauff has advanced to the fourth round of the 2024 US Open with a hard-fought victory over Elina Svitolina. Gauff overcame a challenging three-set battle, winning 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the third round on Friday, August 30.
The match started tightly, with Svitolina taking the first set after capitalizing on Coco Gauff’s unforced errors and breaking serve at 3-3. Despite Gauff’s efforts to level the match, Svitolina took control, winning the final three games of the set.
In the second set, Coco Gauff regrouped and intensified her play. She broke Svitolina’s serve early on and, consequently, maintained a 70% win rate on her second serve. As a result, Gauff’s strong performance earned her a 6-3 set win, leveling the match and shifting the momentum firmly in her favor.
By the third set, Coco Gauff’s dominance was evident as she broke Svitolina’s serve in the opening game. The American continued to pressure her opponent, who struggled with a high number of unforced errors. Gauff’s powerful serves and improved form allowed her to control the set and secure the win despite a late push from Svitolina.
