In a stunning turn of events at the China Open, 49th-ranked Karolina Muchova overcame top seed Aryna Sabalenka in a thrilling quarterfinal match on Friday. Muchova triumphed in a tightly contested three-set match, securing her place in the semifinals with a scoreline of 7-6 (7/5), 2-6, 6-4.
Muchova will face China’s Zheng Qinwen, the Olympic champion, in the semifinals after Zheng’s impressive comeback victory over Mirra Andreeva. The home favorite fought back from a set down to defeat the 17-year-old Russian, winning 5-7, 6-0, 6-4, leaving Andreeva in tears after the match.
Sabalenka, the world number two, entered the tournament on a remarkable 15-match winning streak, having recently claimed titles in both Cincinnati and the US Open. However, she faced challenges against Muchova, who had previously won their last two encounters, both of which required a deciding set.
The match was an intense battle from the start, with Sabalenka facing three break points in the opening game but managing to hold serve. The Belarusian had her chances to seize the first set, including a set point on Muchova’s serve at 5-4, but failed to capitalize. Muchova’s resilience shone through as she earned two set points in the tiebreak, converting the second after a gripping rally to take the lead.
The first set marked a significant moment for Sabalenka, as she dropped her first set since the third round of the US Open. Responding strongly, Sabalenka bounced back in the second set, breaking Muchova’s serve early and cruising to a 6-2 victory.
The deciding set saw both players struggle to hold serve, but it was Muchova who ultimately prevailed. After two hours and 46 minutes of intense competition, she clinched the match, marking a remarkable comeback for the Czech player.
Last year, Muchova ranked ninth in the world after reaching the finals of the French Open and the semifinals at the US Open. However, she interrupted her 2023 season with wrist surgery, sidelining herself for nearly ten months before returning this summer.
As Muchova prepares for her semifinal clash with Zheng, the tennis world watches eagerly to see if she can continue her impressive run at the China Open. In the other semifinal, last year’s US Open champion Coco Gauff will face former world number two Paula Badosa.
