Andy Murray to Join Novak Djokovic’s Team for 2025 Australian Open Bid

In a groundbreaking partnership that has captured the tennis world’s attention, Novak Djokovic will be aiming for a record 25th Grand Slam title at the 2025 Australian Open with none other than Andy Murray in his corner. The two long-time rivals have teamed up in what promises to be one of the most intriguing player-coach relationships in tennis history.

When Does the Partnership Begin?

Murray, who ended his playing career after competing in the 2024 Paris Olympics, is transitioning into coaching and will work with Djokovic during the off-season as the Serbian prepares for his Australian Open campaign. The former World No. 1 announced his new coaching role, saying, “I’m really excited for it. I’ll be joining Novak’s team in the off-season to help him prepare for the Australian Open.”

With the 2024 tennis season now concluded, Murray and Djokovic will likely begin their collaboration shortly, given that there are just six weeks remaining until the start of the 2025 Australian Open, which kicks off on January 12. Djokovic’s previous off-season training has included stints in Marbella, Spain, followed by time in Dubai, so it’s expected he will soon begin similar preparations.

When Will Djokovic Play Before the Australian Open?

Although Djokovic has not yet confirmed his first tournament of the 2025 season, he has stated that he intends to play in the first week of the year before heading to Melbourne. “I’m going at full throttle in the off-season,” Djokovic said recently. “I just needed to recharge and refresh a bit after an exhausting year. I will play in the first week of the season, just not sure where yet. Then, of course, I’ll be ready for the Australian Open.”

In contrast to 2024, when Djokovic chose not to compete in any lead-up events before the Australian Open. He began his 2023 season with a title in Adelaide before going on to win his 10th Australian Open title.

Aiming for History

Djokovic enters 2025 with a clear goal in mind: breaking the Grand Slam record. With 24 titles, Djokovic is currently tied with Margaret Court for the most Grand Slam wins in history. The Australian Open, his most successful major with 10-wins, will be his best opportunity to clinch a historic 25th Grand-Slam.

After a season without a Grand Slam win—his first since 2017—Djokovic is focused on reclaiming the top spot. The retirements of his rivals, including Andy Murray, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal, have weighed heavily on him. “It’s a bit overwhelming for me,” Djokovic admitted in October. “A big part of me left with them. I still enjoy competing, but I do feel that loss.”

As Djokovic prepares for the 2025 Australian Open with Murray in his corner, the stage sets for what could be one of the most exciting chapters in tennis history.
