Torrent Group to Acquire Majority Stake in Gujarat Titans

Torrent Group, an Ahmedabad-based business conglomerate, is set to acquire a 67% majority stake in Gujarat Titans (GT) from CVC Capital Partners (Irelia Company Pte Ltd). CVC had purchased the franchise in 2021 for INR 5625 crore (approximately $750 million). The deal is currently under IPL’s review, with final approval expected before the 2025 season, which begins on March 21.

GT, the 2022 IPL champions, reached the final in 2023 but finished eighth in 2024. They play at the Narendra Modi Stadium, the world’s largest cricket venue. Torrent Group’s subsidiary, Torrent Sports Ventures, was among the final bidders for the two new IPL franchises in 2021. It had bid INR 4653 crore for Ahmedabad and INR 4356 crore for Lucknow but lost out to CVC and the RPSG Group. In 2023, Torrent also unsuccessfully bid for three Women’s Premier League (WPL) franchises.

Torrent Group, valued at INR 41,000 crore, operates through key subsidiaries like Torrent Power and Torrent Pharma. Jinal Mehta, son of chairman emeritus Sudhir Mehta, is expected to oversee this IPL investment.

This acquisition marks CVC’s exit from GT after its first successful cricket venture. The firm had previously bid for Delhi Capitals in 2018 but lost to JSW Group.

GT, currently led by India batter Shubman Gill, boasts key players like Rashid Khan, Jos Buttler, and Mohammed Siraj. With Torrent Group taking charge, GT could see significant strategic shifts ahead of the 2025 season.
