Zinedine Zidane has hinted at a possible return to management, reigniting speculation about a potential move to Manchester United. The 52-year-old Frik renchman, who has been out of the managerial spotlight since leaving Real Madrid for the second time in May 2021, has sparked fresh interest following a recent appearance at a training session with Real Betis.
Zidane’s visit to Betis comes at a time of mounting pressure on Erik ten Hag, the current Manchester United manager. Whose position has come under scrutiny following a difficult start to the season. The Dutchman’s position became even more precarious after a heavy 3-0 defeat to Liverpool at Old Trafford. In response to United’s early-season struggles, the club’s new leadership team, led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, considered several managerial candidates, including Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter, and Gareth Southgate. Recent reports from L’Equipe also suggest that Zidane expressed interest in taking over from Ten Hag.
Although Zidane has been linked with various high-profile roles since leaving Madrid—such as positions at Bayern Munich and national teams like the United States, Brazil, and Algeria—he has yet to return to management. Speaking at the premiere of a film about his former Juventus manager Marcelo Lippi in February, Zidane was open about his future, stating, “Why not, anything can happen. Now I’m doing other things, but we’ll see. I’d certainly like to return to the bench.”
Zidane’s managerial career, which has exclusively been with Real Madrid, is marked by exceptional success. During his two spells at the club, he secured two La Liga titles and three Champions League trophies. Despite his prolonged absence from the managerial scene, Zidane’s philosophy remains clear: he is willing to return only for the right opportunity.
In a 2022 interview with L’Equipe, Zidane explained his approach: “Never say never. Especially when you are a coach today. If I go back to a club, it is to win. I say this with all modesty. That’s why I can’t just go anywhere.”

He also highlighted his commitment to having the right conditions for success, adding, “For other reasons, too. Certain conditions make things more difficult. When someone says to me, ‘Do you want to go to Manchester [United]?’ I understand English but I don’t fully master it. I know there are coaches who go to clubs without speaking the language, but I work differently. To win, many elements come into play. It’s a global context. I know what I need to win. Of course, I might not always win, but I know that you need to have this, this and this. And I want to do everything on my side to optimise my chances of victory.”
As Manchester United navigates a challenging season, Zidane’s potential return remains a topic of speculation and intrigue. His next move could reshape the managerial landscape, with many watching closely to see if the legendary Frenchman will make a high-profile comeback.
