Nitish Rana of Delhi Capitals has been fined and handed a demerit point for using an audible obscenity during their IPL 2026 clash against Chennai Super Kings in Chennai. The incident occurred while Rana was in the dugout after being left out of the playing XI following a poor run of scores—15, 0, and 5 in the opening matches.

During a tense phase of the game, with DC needing 32 runs from the final two overs, Tristan Stubbs, who was batting on 60 off 36 balls, requested a change of gloves. The request was denied, which led to Rana expressing his frustration and engaging in a verbal exchange with fourth umpire Anish Sahasrabudhe. Soon after, Stubbs was dismissed by Jamie Overton without adding to his score, and DC eventually lost the match by 23 runs.
Rana admitted to the offence and was fined 25% of his match fee. Meanwhile, CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was also penalised, but for a different reason. He was fined ₹12 lakh due to his team’s slow over-rate, marking CSK’s first such offence this season.
Gaikwad joins a list of captains penalised for similar offences in IPL 2026, including Shubman Gill of Gujarat Titans and Shreyas Iyer of Punjab Kings. Notably, Iyer has already been fined twice this season for slow over-rates, highlighting the growing emphasis on maintaining match pace in the tournament.
