England all-rounder Chris Woakes has revealed that his recent absence from cricket is due to the passing of his father. Woakes shared that he will return to the sport “when the time is right.”
Woakes, who last played for Sharjah Warriors in the ILT20 in February, has been notably absent from the Punjab Kings in IPL 2024 and his county side Warwickshire. Additionally, England did not include him in their squad for this month’s Twenty20 World Cup in the United States and West Indies.
“The last month has been the most challenging of my life when unfortunately my Dad passed away at the beginning of May,” Woakes announced on Instagram. “I’ve spent the last few weeks with the people most important to me, my family. We’re all obviously grieving and trying to get through what is undoubtedly the hardest moments in our lives.”
The 35-year-old cricketer, who has been a key player in England’s T20 and One-Day International World Cup-winning teams, emphasized that he will return to play for Warwickshire, a team his father cherished, when the time is right for him and his family.
Woakes has had an illustrious international career, featuring in 48 Tests, 122 ODIs, and 33 T20Is, and taking a total of 353 international wickets.
