Afghanistan Cricket Board Plans to Restart Afghanistan Premier League in 2025

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has announced plans to restart the Afghanistan Premier League (APL), their franchise-based T20 tournament, in 2025. Initially launched in 2018 in the UAE, the first edition saw five teams competing, with Balkh Legends emerging as champions by defeating Kabul Zwanan in Sharjah.

Relaunching the APL reflects Afghanistan’s cricket growth and strengthens its cricketing infrastructure. Despite several attempts to revive the league since its inaugural edition, logistical challenges have delayed its return.

ACB CEO Naseeb Khan expressed confidence in resuming the tournament post the next Indian Premier League (IPL) season, citing the current busy schedule with international commitments and domestic tournaments. He mentioned ongoing discussions with interested companies and outlined plans for board approval and subsequent actions to facilitate the league’s comeback.

Afghanistan is currently enjoying a successful T20 World Cup 2024 campaign, having secured a spot in the semifinals after victories over Australia and Bangladesh in the Super Eight stage. Led by Rashid Khan, the team will face unbeaten South Africa in the semifinals at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad, on June 27.
