In a dramatic finish to the sport climbing competition at Paris 2024, Toby Roberts of Great Britain clinched the gold medal after Japan’s Anraku Sorato, the event favorite, narrowly missed his target on the Lead wall. The thrilling conclusion unfolded as the last climber of the day, 17-year-old Anraku, attempted to solidify his position at the top of the leaderboard.

Anraku, who had dominated the Boulder round and entered the Lead portion as the frontrunner, needed 86 points to secure the gold. This meant reaching four holds from the top would have given him a winning score of 88 points. With five Lead World Cup victories and eight medals to his name despite his young age, the Japanese climber was widely expected to seal the deal.

As Anraku ascended the challenging route, the tension in the arena was palpable. He made his way to the highest section of the wall, coming within two holds of the top and a guaranteed gold medal. However, in a sudden and surprising turn of events, Anraku lost his grip and fell, coming up just short of his goal. The fall meant he scored 145.4 points, which was not enough to surpass Roberts.

Watching from below, Roberts initially seemed in disbelief as the realization of his victory dawned on him. His hands flew to his head in shock before covering his face as the reality set in—he had just won the gold medal for Great Britain with a total score of 155.2 points.

Jakob Schubert of Austria, another strong contender, finished with a score of 139.6 points, securing the bronze medal. Anraku, despite his impressive performance throughout the competition, had to settle for silver.
