Australia achieved a remarkable one-two finish in the women’s 200m freestyle Olympics at Paris 2024, led by Mollie O’Callaghan who claimed gold and set a new Olympic record with a time of 1:53.27. Her teammate Ariarne Titmus secured the silver medal, finishing close behind at 1:53.81. Siobhan Bernadette Haughey from Hong Kong, China, earned the bronze medal with a time of 1:54.55.

This event drew significant attention due to the rivalry between O’Callaghan and Titmus. Their competition had intensified since Australia’s Olympic swim trials in Brisbane, where Titmus had triumphed over O’Callaghan, setting a new world record and breaking O’Callaghan’s previous record.
However, the Olympics saw a reversal of fortunes as O’Callaghan delivered a stunning performance. In the final lap, she surged ahead of Titmus, showcasing incredible speed and determination to clinch the win. Her time of 1:53.27 not only secured her the gold medal but also set a new Olympic record, surpassing the previous mark of 1:53.50 set by Titmus at Tokyo 2020.
The women’s 200m freestyle medals were awarded as follows:
- Gold: Mollie O’Callaghan (Australia)
- Silver: Ariarne Titmus (Australia)
- Bronze: Siobhan Bernadette Haughey (Hong Kong, China)
O’Callaghan’s victory in Paris 2024 was a testament to her resilience and competitive spirit, marking a significant milestone in her swimming career and adding to Australia’s swimming achievements.
