Rider Hit with 17-Hour Penalty While FaceTiming His Mother During Baja 1000

In a bizarre twist to the off-season of motorcycle racing, a dirt bike rider has been hit with a 17-hour penalty after completing the grueling Baja 1000 race while FaceTiming his mother throughout the event.

Ben Hunter, who has Type 1 diabetes, remained determined to race the prestigious Baja 1000, one of the toughest off-road events in the world, despite his mother’s concerns over his health. To ease her worries, Hunter devised an unusual solution: he live-streamed the entire race via FaceTime, with his mother watching him throughout the competition.

“I wanted to race the Baja 1000 so badly, but my mom wouldn’t let me because of my condition,” Hunter explained. “She said the only way I could race was if I streamed the whole thing, so I did exactly that.”

Hunter showed up at the start of the race with a Starlink Mini device taped to his helmet and connected to a power supply, allowing his mother to stay connected to him via FaceTime during the race. The Baja 1000, held on the rugged Baja California Peninsula, challenges competitors with its difficult terrain and demanding nature, establishing itself as a major milestone in off-road motorsports.

However, while Hunter’s attempt to placate his mother was admirable, his efforts on the track were less successful. After taking an “unallowed path” during the race, officials slapped him with a 17-hour time penalty, which ultimately led to his official disqualification from the event.

It seems the penalty wasn’t the only consequence for Hunter—his mother, who had watched every moment unfold, likely gave him a stern talking-to. Despite the setback, Hunter’s determination to race and keep his mother reassured about his health showcased an interesting and unique approach to off-road racing.
