Phillip Island MotoGP Sprint: Accident Updates for Marco Bezzecchi, Maverick Vinales, and Pedro Acosta

The Australian MotoGP Sprint on Saturday was marred by a series of accidents involving Marco Bezzecchi, Maverick Vinales, and rookie Pedro Acosta, prompting medical checks for all three riders.

The most alarming incident occurred at Turn 1 when Bezzecchi collided with Vinales during the penultimate lap. Vinales had just slipped past Bezzecchi for fifth place moments before the 140 mph crash. While Vinales managed to walk away from the scene, Bezzecchi was stretchered away from the gravel trap.

Following the crash, Aprilia released a statement regarding Vinales’ condition: “After the crash, medical center staff immediately assessed Maverick Viñales.” The medical report indicates multiple contusions without fractures. He is conscious and shows no neurological signs, but a sonography of his upper arm is pending further evaluation.”

Meanwhile, VR46 provided an update on Bezzecchi, stating that he also appears to have escaped fractures but that medical personnel are taking him to a hospital in Melbourne for further scans: “Following a medical check at the Circuit Medical Centre, Marco Bezzecchi is en route to Melbourne for additional examination.” The doctors have not diagnosed any fractures at this time.”

Bezzecchi’s condition may delay the FIM Stewards’ decision on potential penalties for the collision, which is currently under official investigation. The stewards have announced they will postpone their verdict until Sunday due to Bezzecchi’s “current medical condition.”

In a separate incident, rookie Pedro Acosta experienced a significant highside at Turn 6 while running in 11th place. Tech3 reported: “Acosta had a bit of a nasty high-side, but medical checks confirmed that nothing is broken, despite some shoulder pain. He will undergo another examination tomorrow morning before the race.”

As the MotoGP community awaits updates on the riders’ conditions, the focus will shift to their recovery and the implications for the upcoming races.
