Newly crowned MotoGP world champion Jorge Martin found himself at the center of a media tug-of-war between two competing Spanish television shows this week. Just four days after celebrating his historic title in Barcelona, Martin was scheduled to appear on La Revuelta. A prime-time talk show hosted by David Broncano on Spain’s state-run Television Española.
However, El Hormiguero, a long-running rival talk show that airs at the same time, abruptly canceled the appearance due to external pressures. El Hormiguero, which has been on air since 2006, competes directly with La Revuelta for viewership and is part of the Atresmedia media group, which also owns La Sexta. This group has a significant partnership with MotoGP promoter Dorna, providing free-to-air coverage of select races.
Pressure to Cancel Appearance
As Martin prepared to appear on La Revuelta, Broncano publicly revealed the intense pressure Martin had faced to cancel his interview. According to Broncano, the rider was backstage and ready to go on air when he informed the team that El Hormiguero had intervened. Broncano expressed frustration, stating:
“Jorge Martin, MotoGP world champion, was supposed to come today. He’s right here in the dressing room. But half an hour before the show, he told us that El Hormiguero had found out and, with their influence, pressured him to cancel. Jorge said he couldn’t go through with it because of the consequences it would cause.”
The incident caused a stir, with many speculating about the tactics used by El Hormiguero to retain exclusive access to Martin.
El Hormiguero’s Response
In response to the accusations, El Hormiguero issued a statement on social media, explaining that the situation was a “misunderstanding” and that the blame lay with Martin’s representatives and the Dorna agency, not the show itself. They clarified:
“Two weeks before the championship final, we had an exclusive agreement with Jorge Martin. Today, a representative made a scheduling error by changing the visit to another rider. After this, Dorna stepped in to help resolve the issue.”
Despite the confusion, La Revuelta continued filming, and people expect Martin to appear on the show at a later date, after his scheduled appearance on El Hormiguero next week.
The Backlash and Media Maneuvering
The controversy began when Martin prematurely posted on social media, announcing his appearance on La Revuelta, which is known for keeping its guest list secret until the show is recorded. Although Martin quickly deleted the post, it was enough for El Hormiguero to act, potentially using its media influence with Dorna to alter the plans.
The media frenzy has made Martin’s visit to El Hormiguero next week highly anticipated, though many are questioning the behind-the-scenes dealings that caused the change.
This drama has shed light on the complex relationship between media, sponsorship deals, and sports personalities, particularly in the highly competitive world of television ratings and sponsorships tied to major events like MotoGP.
