Marc Marquez Reflects on Q2 Crashes and Third-Place Finish in Mandalika MotoGP Sprint

Marc Marquez expressed that finishing third in the MotoGP Indonesian Grand Prix sprint race was “the maximum” he could have achieved, even if he hadn’t started from 12th position due to two costly crashes in Q2 qualifying.

For the third consecutive weekend, the Gresini rider faced significant setbacks during the Q2 session, resulting in two crashes that left him unable to set a lap time. As a result, Marquez found himself starting from 12th on the grid. However, he demonstrated remarkable skill by rapidly advancing to fifth place at the first corner and eventually finishing third, staying competitive for the lead throughout the race.

After finishing 1.7 seconds behind the sprint winner, Marquez reflected on his performance, stating, “It penalised me a lot, but after analysing the race, starting from the first or second row, I would have finished in the same position.” This sentiment underscores his belief that he maximized his potential in the race, even from a lower starting position. Following the sprint, Marquez reduced his championship deficit to Jorge Martin—who also experienced a crash—bringing it down to 53 points.

Marquez highlighted the importance of the first lap, noting, “Today we had a very good first lap, but tomorrow it will be more difficult. It depends on the start.” He described the thrill of overtaking multiple riders off the line, but acknowledged that such an advantage might not be sustainable in future races.

He elaborated on the unpredictability of the start, saying, “If you start well and have a faster pace than those in front, you can position yourself effectively. However, if you don’t start well and the others are quicker, you can struggle to find your place.”

Reflecting on his qualifying struggles, Marquez noted the impact of his tire choices. He explained, “In the second crash, I used a hard front tire that I didn’t favor for time attacks, which affected my grip. I managed my pace well, but it wasn’t enough. The first crash was similar; I locked the rear brake and lost control, which resulted in a sharp return that caused me to lose the front end.”

As Marquez gears up for the next race, he remains optimistic yet aware of the challenges that lie ahead.
