Marc Marquez has shared his perspective on controversial collision between Francesco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP race. The incident, which occurred early in the race, resulted in a significant shift in the championship standings and has sparked considerable debate within the MotoGP community.
Marquez, who went on to win the Aragon race by a comfortable five-second margin over Jorge Martin, addressed the crash during the post-race press conference. While careful not to place definitive blame, Marquez hinted that Bagnaia may have been overly ambitious in his approach.
“I saw it,” Marquez said when asked about the incident. “I think Alex went wide. He was still on the track, but when you arrive at that right corner, he didn’t expect Pecco [Bagnaia] to be there. Pecco was optimistic in trying to overtake him from the outside, aiming to use the clean line. Because if you go out on the dirty line, everything becomes more risky.”
Marquez called the crash a “very unlucky situation” and expressed his hope that both riders remained unharmed. The incident has had a significant impact on the championship standings, with Bagnaia now trailing Martin by 23 points. Bagnaia had entered the weekend five points ahead but now faces a steeper challenge in the upcoming Misano double-header.
This collision marks another tense moment between Bagnaia and a Gresini Ducati in 2024. It follows their earlier clashes, including the dramatic crash between Bagnaia and Marc Marquez at the Portuguese Grand Prix and their close contact at the Spanish Grand Prix while battling for victory.
Bagnaia and the elder Marquez brother now share one of the most closely watched relationships in MotoGP. As the two prepare to share the factory Ducati garage in 2025 and 2026, their rivalry is expected to intensify. Especially with both aiming for the World Championship title.
