MotoGP has finalized a deal to bring premier motorcycle racing back to Hungary for the first time in 33 years, with the Balaton Park Circuit slated to host the event in 2025. The announcement marks a significant milestone for the championship, which has not visited the country since 1992.
According to reports, the newly constructed Balaton Park Circuit, located on the outskirts of Budapest, will be one of the key highlights of the 2025 MotoGP calendar. The inaugural race is scheduled for August 22-24, 2025. In preparation for this historic debut, the circuit will also host a World Superbike Championship event from July 25-27.
It is anticipated that the Portimao circuit in Portugal, which has been a regular fixture since its introduction in 2020, will be removed from next year’s schedule to accommodate Hungary.
Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Dorna Sports, expressed enthusiasm about the return to Hungary: “We’re very happy to announce that Balaton Park will be on the 2025 calendar for MotoGP and WorldSBK. The circuit is in a spectacular location and will be a fantastic destination for fans to witness the world’s most exciting sport in action.”

Preparations for the event are already underway, with the venue undergoing necessary modifications to meet the FIM’s Grade A Licence requirements. Key changes will include the addition of two smaller-radius corners at Turn 7, an expanded run-off area, and a new chicane replacing the original Turn 11 to enhance safety and create more overtaking opportunities. Additionally, a new combination of technical corners will be introduced just below the circuit hotel to increase the challenge for riders.
MotoGP is expected to announce the complete 2025 calendar in the near future. Hungary last hosted a MotoGP event in 1992, when Eddie Lawson clinched victory on a Cagiva at the Hungaroring, a venue that is now predominantly known for the Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix.
With its return to Hungary, MotoGP is set to add another exciting chapter to the country’s rich history in motorcycle racing.
