Marc Marquez has opened up about his decision to part ways with long-time mentor Emilio Alzamora in 2022, citing the natural evolution of his personal and professional needs as he got older. The eight-time world champion had closely worked with Alzamora since the age of 12, building a successful partnership together. However, by the time Marquez reached 30, he felt it was time for a change.
The decision, which marked a major shift in Marquez’s career, came amid a broader transformation that saw the Spanish rider eventually leave Repsol Honda to join Ducati’s factory team for 2025. While this move is often seen as part of a grand plan for change, Marquez clarified that the split with Alzamora was rooted in his own evolving needs rather than external factors.
The Need for Change
In a recent interview with Motosan, Marquez explained that as riders grow older, their personal and professional requirements change, which can lead to difficult decisions. He likened the situation to relationships, where feelings may evolve over time.
“A rider does not have the same needs as he gets older,” Marquez said. “Many times, no matter how much you are in love at 18, it doesn’t mean that she is the woman of your life. Then there comes a point, either because of the moment I was in or what I needed, I began to understand my personal life in a different way, and I had to make certain decisions for my well-being.”
Although Marquez and Alzamora had collaborated harmoniously for years, Marquez realized that their needs no longer aligned. “We’ve always done an impeccable job together, but they were different needs, and I felt at the time that I needed a change,” Marquez added.
Personal Growth and Professional Decisions
Reflecting on the broader shifts in his career, Marquez acknowledged that at 30, he had more experience and confidence in his own decisions. He felt capable of making choices about his career path, including his departure from Honda, without necessarily seeking advice or approval from others.
“You don’t have the same needs at 18 as you do at 30,” Marquez explained. “When I took the step of leaving Emilio, at the age of 30, he can take the songs with him. Why look for someone to take it to you? In the end, the motorcycle, the helmet, the overalls, you can choose it. When you are young, you have to let yourself be advised. But at 30 years old, when you already know how the subject is going and you already have some experience, you don’t need to be told what to do.”
Marquez has always shaped his career through bold decisions, and his move from Honda to join Ducati’s factory team in 2025 further demonstrates his evolving mindset. As he continues to grow as both a person and a rider, Marquez remains focused on his future and the challenges ahead.
