Francesco Bagnaia claimed a crucial pole position for the Barcelona MotoGP showdown, while also providing a strategic tow to Marc Marquez, helping him secure a spot on the front row. As the battle for the title intensifies, Bagnaia, trailing Jorge Martin by 24 points, emphasized that his focus would remain on racing for the win, but acknowledged his role in aiding others during qualifying.

Marquez, who had struggled to find pace on Friday and qualified in eighth, capitalized on Bagnaia’s slipstreaming tactics, shadowing the Italian through both Q2 runs. At one point, Bagnaia’s assistance not only propelled Marquez to second, but also pulled Franco Morbidelli to third on the grid.

Jorge Martin, aiming for the championship, received his own help from Aprilia’s Aleix Espargaro. Despite pushing hard and coming within 0.055s of Bagnaia on his final lap, Martin ultimately settled for fourth on the grid, leading the second row.

Bagnaia was candid about his strategy, confirming that helping others in qualifying was part of his plan to put more riders between him and Martin. “I tried to help someone yesterday and today. I need to put more bikes between me and Jorge, so that was the plan and it worked,” Bagnaia explained. “He’s starting 4th, so it’s very close, but I’m happy overall because I think we have the pace, both in time attack and in race pace. Now, we just need to stay focused and prepare for the race.”

Marquez, appreciative of the help, admitted that while he didn’t truly earn a front-row spot on his own, he made the most of Bagnaia’s strategic towing. “It’s not a real front row, especially because I took the slipstream from Pecco,” said Marquez. “He’s super fast, and I knew he’d push even with other riders behind him. It wasn’t just me—Morbidelli also benefited from his tow. Pecco’s smart and he needs to get riders between him and Jorge. My target for the race is the top five.”

The one setback in Bagnaia’s plan came in the form of Aleix Espargaro’s impressive late charge. The Aprilia rider, who had struggled with his bike setup earlier, switched to a different front tire for his second run, improving his confidence and securing second on the grid with a time of 38.6 seconds, just behind Bagnaia. Espargaro, who won the May race in Barcelona, could also play a pivotal role in assisting Martin during the race.

“I tried my best,” Espargaro said, “I had some problems with the front tire in the first run, but after changing it, I felt much better. I knew Martin was behind me, so I pushed hard and was able to set a fast lap.”

With Martin needing to score more points than Bagnaia to secure the championship this afternoon, the race promises to be a dramatic battle for the title as the competitors aim to capitalize on every opportunity.
