Following a challenging Qatar Grand Prix, MotoGP rider Joan Mir emphasized the need for Honda to intensify its development efforts in order to break free from what he describes as the “Japanese Cup” division.
Despite Honda’s efforts to revamp its approach to MotoGP and adapt to the absence of star rider Marc Marquez in the factory Repsol team, the Qatar race highlighted the ongoing challenges the team faces in bridging the gap to the front-runners. Mir found himself battling with Fabio Quartararo for 11th place, with both Honda and Yamaha seemingly competing in a secondary division behind their European rivals.

While Mir managed to overtake Quartararo in the closing stages, he admits to pushing too hard and ultimately damaging his tires, finishing in 13th place behind Johann Zarco’s similar RC213V.
Mir acknowledges that Honda has made improvements and become more responsive to rider feedback, but the strides made by Ducati, KTM, and Aprilia over the winter have widened the performance gap between the European and Japanese manufacturers. He stresses the importance of Honda maintaining its development pace to have any hope of catching up with its rivals.
Mir’s teammate, Luca Marini, cautions against drawing hasty conclusions from one race, emphasizing the need for patience and steady progress in Honda’s journey back to competitiveness.
