Marini: Present Focus Key for Honda Amid MotoGP’s 2027 Rule Changes

MotoGP recently unveiled its comprehensive technical regulations overhaul for 2027, featuring significant changes like the adoption of 850cc engines and reduced aerodynamics. While these alterations are expected to shake up the competitive landscape, Honda’s struggles in the current season prompt questions about their approach to the future rules.

With Honda off to a challenging start in the 2024 campaign, scoring only 13 points in the constructors’ standings after four rounds, the prospect of redirecting focus towards the 2027 regulations arises. However, Luca Marini, speaking ahead of the French Grand Prix, emphasized the importance of staying grounded in the present.

Marini dismissed thoughts of Honda shifting attention to the 2027 rules, stating, “It’s too far, 2027, it’s too far.” He stressed the significance of addressing current challenges, citing the valuable knowledge gained in the present that will undoubtedly shape the future.

Acknowledging Honda’s unexpected performance struggles, Marini maintained his confidence in the team and his relationship with Honda Racing Corporation (HRC). Despite setbacks with the new project at the start of the season, Marini highlighted the team’s resilience and unity in working through difficulties.

Regarding the 2025 rider market, Marini and Johann Zarco are the sole Honda riders with contracts extending beyond the current season. This places 2020 world champion Joan Mir in a pivotal position, considering his future amidst various offers.

Mir, who joined Honda last year following Suzuki’s departure, admitted needing more time to weigh his options and make a well-informed decision about his future endeavors. As he deliberates his next move, Mir remains focused on ensuring the best outcome for himself moving forward.
