Livio Suppo, former MotoGP team manager, sheds light on the differences between two iconic riders, Casey Stoner and Marc Marquez, whom he managed during their respective stints with Repsol Honda.

Suppo, having overseen Stoner’s historic 2007 MotoGP title with Ducati, later worked with him again at Repsol Honda in 2011 when Stoner secured his second world championship. However, Stoner surprised the racing community by retiring at the age of 27 in 2012.

Regarding Stoner and Marquez, Suppo states, “Very similar in terms of speed and talent, totally different in terms of character.” He notes Marquez’s positive and friendly disposition, always enjoying his role as a MotoGP rider. In contrast, Stoner is described as a more complex personality, which may have contributed to his early retirement.

Reflecting on Stoner’s departure, Suppo acknowledges, “Clearly, if racing was such a demanding activity for him, in terms of mental stress and not being happy with what he was doing, I totally understand his choice.” He expresses regret that fans never had the chance to witness Stoner and Marquez racing together.

Suppo confirmed that the initial plan was to have Marquez alongside Stoner for the 2013 season. Still, Marc Marquez ended up joining the Repsol Honda team alongside Dani Pedrosa after Stoner’s unexpected retirement.

Regarding Marquez’s recent departure from Honda, Suppo initially thought it was a negotiating tactic for better conditions. However, he acknowledges being wrong and highlights the difficulty Marquez faced in leaving behind his longtime team, especially his crew, with whom he had a strong relationship.

Addressing Marquez’s move to Ducati, Suppo expresses confidence in Marquez’s speed but notes the challenge of adapting to a new bike and the need to learn the Ducati system.

The interview also touches upon the absence of a rivalry like that of Valentino Rossi and the significance of having more international representation in MotoGP.

Overall, Suppo’s insights provide a glimpse into the complex dynamics between riders’ personalities and the challenges they face both on and off the track.
