Ducati Desmosedici GP03: Iconic MotoGP Bike Set for Auction with £200,000 Price Tag

This weekend, the iconic Ducati Desmosedici GP03 is set to make waves at Silverstone, where it will be auctioned as part of Iconic Auctioneers’ renowned Iconic Sale. With a guide price ranging between £180,000 and £200,000, this classic MotoGP bike represents a significant investment for enthusiasts and collectors alike.

Ducati designed the Desmosedici GP03, the inaugural iteration of their MotoGP machine, for the second season of the 990cc regulations that transitioned Grand Prix racing from two-stroke to four-stroke engines. This model marked Ducati’s entry into the premier class of motorcycle racing, and while it was reasonably successful, it had its limitations.

Loris Capirossi secured Ducati’s first MotoGP victory with the Desmosedici GP03 at the 2003 Catalan Grand Prix, capitalizing on an error by Repsol Honda’s Valentino Rossi. Despite its initial success, the Desmosedici GP03 faced challenges, particularly in turning performance, which the engineers at Borgo Panigale struggled to rectify.

Though Casey Stoner clinched a title with Ducati in 2007, the bike’s shortcomings persisted, leading to a winless period from 2011 to 2015. Efforts to refine the Desmosedici included contributions from several riders, including Rossi, but a breakthrough only came with Gigi Dall’Igna’s arrival in 2014. His leadership ushered in a new era for Ducati, culminating in Andrea Iannone’s victory in 2016 and subsequent dominance in the MotoGP series.

Since then, Ducati has been a dominant force, capturing every Constructors’ and Teams’ title from 2019 onward and securing Riders’ titles with Francesco Bagnaia in 2022 and 2023.

The 2024 season has seen Ducati continue its dominance, winning 10 of the first 11 Grands Prix and nine of the first 11 Sprint races, achieving podium finishes in 29 of the 33 races so far, including podium lockouts in the last eight rounds.

The Ducati Desmosedici GP03 up for auction remains a symbol of Ducati’s journey from its early days in MotoGP to its current dominance. The bike retains its full factory team livery from the 2003 season, featuring Capirossi’s famous #65. A 989cc desmodromic V4 engine powers it, producing over 220bhp, and it features a 305mm carbon brake disc for display purposes, along with the original Öhlins suspension. The only change from the original specification is a slight update to the ignition system by Magneti Marelli.

Iconic Auctioneers describes this bike as “a very usable example with spares readily available” and a “remarkable opportunity to own a piece of Ducati and MotoGP history.” The auction will take place on Sunday, August 25, and is a chance for collectors and racing fans to acquire a significant piece of motorcycle racing heritage.
