Augusto Fernandez Faces Uncertain MotoGP Future as 2025 Seat Speculation Heats Up

Augusto Fernandez is navigating a precarious situation as he aims to secure a MotoGP ride for 2025 following a challenging first half of the 2024 season. Currently positioned 17th in the riders’ standings. Fernandez’s prospects have been further complicated by KTM’s decision to promote his GasGas Tech3 teammate. Pedro Acosta, to the factory team. Meanwhile, KTM has also recruited Enea Bastianini and Maverick Vinales for Tech3, leaving Fernandez in a vulnerable position.

In an exclusive interview with Crash.net at Silverstone, Fernandez candidly described his current status. “I’m in the worst situation I can be,” he said. “I’m kind of out of MotoGP, so now I just focus on jumping on the bike and making the most of every minute I’m on track.”

Despite the challenges, Fernandez remains committed to staying in MotoGP and is eyeing remaining opportunities. Including potential seats at Pramac Yamaha or alongside Raul Fernandez at the Trackhouse Aprilia squad. “It’s not easy, but I want to finish all the opportunities that I can have here in MotoGP.” Fernandez admitted, though he acknowledged that “there are not so many.”

Fernandez’s predicament mirrors that of Fabio Di Giannantonio from last year, who appeared set to exit MotoGP but is now reportedly in line for a 2025-spec Ducati ride. Fernandez is also determined to avoid a return to Moto2, where he was the World Champion in 2022. “For the moment, the last thing to do is go back to Moto2,” he said, noting that his manager is actively exploring all offers.

Should a MotoGP seat remain elusive, Fernandez is open to transitioning to WorldSBK. “It [WorldSBK] would be my second choice, or my second priority,” he explained. “Even before Moto2 because I’m still young [26], and I know I still have a lot to do in this-world.” Fernandez appreciates WorldSBK’s competitive nature and exciting races but emphasizes that it is not his immediate focus. “It’s not my priority now; I will think about Superbike when it’s clear that I go there, not for moment.”

Fernandez anticipates that his future will be decided soon, with contracts typically being signed as early as MotoGP’s first race in Qatar. “I need to get my future [secured], and it’s not going to be [waiting] until Valencia,” he said. “Now, the contracts are signed in Qatar, so it’s going to be now [that Fernandez’ future will be decided].”
