With retirement rumors swirling, UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones has surprised fans by proposing an unexpected fight against Alex Pereira for the coveted “Baddest Motherf***er” (BMF) title.
As UFC 309 approaches, many expect Jones’ upcoming bout with Stipe Miocic on November 16 to be his last, marking a legacy-defining clash between two of the sport’s greatest champions. Many regard the fight with Miocic as the ideal finale for both fighters, as Miocic is also contemplating retirement. However, Jones has hinted he may not be ready to hang up his gloves just yet.
Despite public pressure, Jones remains uninterested in facing rising star Tom Aspinall, who recently won the interim heavyweight title against Sergei Pavlovich. Jones expressed disappointment with the decision to make the Aspinall-Pavlovich matchup for an interim title, saying it was unnecessary and only created confusion.
Jones explained, “They shouldn’t have introduced the interim championship in the first place.” “The only reason it happened was because I got hurt, and they needed to keep the Madison Square Garden event relevant. Sergei and Tom should have just been a main event, not a title fight. It was premature to make it an interim belt when there’s already a dominant champion like me in the division.”
Jones then dropped a bombshell, revealing he might delay retirement if a BMF title fight with Alex Pereira is on the table. “Fighting Pereira for the BMF belt would be amazing. We both hold titles in two weight classes, so going head-to-head for a third belt—the BMF title—would be incredible,” Jones said. “I’d even be willing to walk away from the heavyweight championship for it.”
While fans are buzzing about Jones’ proposal, we still have to see whether Pereira, fresh off winning the light heavyweight title, would accept the challenge. A showdown between Jones and Pereira for the BMF title would certainly create excitement and could be a fitting swan song for both fighters’ illustrious careers.
