Jon Jones has responded to accusations that he is avoiding a fight with Tom Aspinall, calling out the criticism in a recent social media post and interview.
During an interview with Kevin Iole, Jones discussed his plans following his anticipated heavyweight title defense against Stipe Miocic at UFC 309. Jones revealed that, after facing Miocic, he is most interested in a champion vs. champion showdown with light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira. The potential bout between two of the biggest stars in MMA has already captured widespread attention, with Jones, a dominant former light heavyweight champion, looking to build his legacy in the heavyweight division.
However, Jones’ decision to target a fight with Pereira has drawn the ire of some fans and media members who feel that interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall, ranked No. 1 in the division by MMA Fighting, deserves a shot at Jones first. Aspinall, who successfully defended his interim title once, has been vocal about his desire to face Jones, especially considering the fact that Jones has not fought since March 2023 due to a pectoral injury, which delayed his fight with Miocic by an entire year.
In response to the growing criticism, Jones fired back in a now-deleted tweet. “I’m going to hide in my mansion and not come outside, people are calling me a duck come on ho my world is over,” he wrote, followed by a dismissive “what is this high school? lol.”
Shortly after deleting the tweet, Jones took to social media again, offering a more measured response to the criticism. He explained, “I root every decision in purpose at this point in my career.” “My journey isn’t dictated by hype or outside opinions—it’s about crafting a legacy that speaks for itself, one step at a time. I’m here to do what’s right for my career and my legacy, with a vision that’s clear and unshakable. Focused, driven, and in complete control of myself. The story continues, and it’s unfolding exactly as I’ve envisioned.”
Jones, already regarded as one of the greatest UFC fighters of all time due to his legendary light heavyweight career, has largely stayed out of the octagon since he won the heavyweight title in March 2023. He gained widespread recognition for defending his UFC light heavyweight championship 11 times, though personal issues outside the cage interrupted his reign, including a 2015 hit-and-run conviction and a failed drug test in 2016.
The upcoming heavyweight title fight against Miocic marks Jones’ first defense of his new title, and he plans to further solidify his legacy, even as calls for a showdown with Aspinall continue.
Update: Aspinall has since responded to Jones’ remarks, fueling the ongoing back-and-forth between the two heavyweights.
