Joe Rogan Champions Kamaru Usman for Next Welterweight Title Shot: ‘He Deserves It’

The momentum behind Kamaru Usman’s bid for a welterweight title shot in 2024 continues to build. Often regarded as one of the greatest welterweights of all time, Usman, despite recent setbacks, remains a formidable contender in the 170-pound division. UFC commentator Joe Rogan has weighed in, arguing that Usman deserves the next title opportunity, particularly in light of his recent challenges and contributions to the sport.

Usman, a former champion, experienced a series of losses after losing his title to Leon Edwards in 2022. His latest bout, a short-notice fight against Khamzat Chimaev at middleweight, ended in a majority decision loss. Despite this, Rogan believes Usman’s performance and willingness to step up on short notice warrant a title shot.

On his Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Rogan emphasized, “I think they should give Kamaru the fight. It’s the smart move and the big money fight. They owe Kamaru for taking on Khamzat with just 10 days’ notice. Even though he lost, he performed admirably and showed he’s still a top contender. The fight was only three rounds, and Usman looked like he was coming on strong in the third round. He had to adapt quickly and trust his conditioning. He deserved better for stepping up in such a challenging situation.”

Chimaev’s victory over Usman at UFC 294 last October remains a highlight for both fighters. While Chimaev is set to return to the octagon next month, Usman is still awaiting his next opportunity. Usman has expressed interest in facing new champion Belal Muhammad, who has stirred debate about potential matchups.

Rogan also acknowledged the rising contender Shavkat Rakhmonov, who remains undefeated and has been vocal about his title aspirations. Rogan sees merit in a matchup between Rakhmonov and Muhammad but suggests that Usman’s time in the sport is more limited.

“You don’t have many more years left for Kamaru,” Rogan said. “He’s 37 now, so it’s time to give him another shot. Shavkat Rakhmonov is an exceptional talent, and his legend continues to grow with each win. However, Usman has earned this opportunity.”

Rogan also highlighted Belal Muhammad’s achievements, noting that Muhammad has gone unbeaten in 11 consecutive fights. Despite Muhammad’s impressive performance against Edwards at UFC 304 and his overall record, Rogan feels he has not received the full recognition he deserves.

“Belal doesn’t get nearly the respect he deserves,” Rogan said. “His performance against Leon Edwards was extraordinary. He overwhelmed Edwards with his pressure and danger on the feet. It’s about time he gets the acknowledgment he deserves.”

As the UFC welterweight division continues to evolve, the debate over title challengers remains dynamic, with Rogan’s endorsement of Usman adding a notable voice to the conversation.
