Francis Ngannou, the former UFC heavyweight champion, is set to make his promotional debut this Saturday at the PFL’s “Battle of the Giants” pay-per-view event, facing knockout artist Renan Ferreira. However, this moment comes on the heels of an unimaginable personal tragedy—the loss of his 15-month-old son, Kobe.
In an emotional interview, Ngannou revealed that the heartbreaking incident nearly led him to walk away from fighting entirely. Yet, he found a renewed sense of purpose amidst the pain. “This fight was most likely not to happen. I was most likely not to fight this year, or never,” Ngannou told MMA Fighting. “But I want to give it a purpose. Instead of using it as an excuse to give-up, I want to continue and make things more meaningful and impactful.”
Ngannou’s loss has fueled his determination to honor his son’s memory through his actions inside the cage. He expressed a desire to transform this tragedy into something constructive. “After that, I really considered dropping everything,” he said. “But thinking about it, he would’ve been like the one taking me out, making me quit, which is not a responsibility I think he should carry. That is my responsibility.”
The 38-year-old fighter last competed in the MMA cage nearly three years ago, successfully defending his UFC heavyweight title against Ciryl Gane in January 2022. Following that victory, he made the decision to leave the UFC and sign with the PFL. Securing significant boxing opportunities against Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua. Although he faced defeat in both bouts, Ngannou now turns his focus back to MMA as he prepares for his first fight in the PFL Smart Cage.
As he steps into the arena in Saudi Arabia, Ngannou carries with him the weight of his loss but also a fierce determination to make Kobe proud. “The only thing I can do is make a purpose of his existence, or of this loss,” he said. “I want to write his name in a better way for him to be remembered.”
With his heart heavy but his resolve strong, Ngannou aims to channel his grief into a powerful performance. Ensuring that his son’s legacy lives on through his journey in the sport he loves.
