Mark Zuckerberg’s enthusiasm for mixed martial arts (MMA) has raised concerns among investors regarding its potential implications for Meta, the parent company of social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram.
In Meta’s recent financial disclosure for 2024, the company addressed various risk factors to its business, including Zuckerberg’s growing involvement in combat sports. The 39-year-old CEO began training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and MMA, even hinting at a potential bout against fellow billionaire Elon Musk.
Zuckerberg’s injury, a torn ACL suffered during training, likely prompted the warning to investors about the potential impact of his interest in combat sports on the company’s operations.

The financial disclosure stated, “We currently depend on the continued services and performance of our key personnel, including Mark Zuckerberg. Mr. Zuckerberg and certain other members of management participate in various high-risk activities, such as combat sports, extreme sports, and recreational aviation, which carry the risk of serious injury and death.”
It further emphasized, “If Mr. Zuckerberg were to become unavailable for any reason, there could be a material adverse impact on our operations.”
In response to the listed risk factors, Zuckerberg shared a GIF on Threads featuring UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski with the caption “high risk = high reward.”
As Meta’s CEO and the largest shareholder in the company, Zuckerberg has engaged with prominent figures in MMA, including Volkanovski and former middleweight champion Israel Adesanya. Additionally, he achieved a blue belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu under renowned instructor Dave Camarillo.
Despite months of teasing a potential fight against Musk and discussions involving UFC CEO Dana White, the proposed bout never materialized. However, Zuckerberg continued his training, leading to the ACL injury that required reconstructive surgery and likely impacted his availability for work during recovery.
