In a recent episode of the Anik and Florian Podcast, the esteemed UFC play-by-play commentator, Jon Anik, expressed his frustration with the toxic backlash he faced on social media following his scoring of the UFC 297 main event. The closely contested match saw Dricus du Plessis claim the UFC middleweight title by defeating champion Sean Strickland via split decision.

Anik, known for his accessibility and engagement with fans, shared his dismay at the negativity that inundated his social media feeds after the event. The veteran commentator, at 45 years of age, hinted at a potential departure from the MMA space due to the relentless criticism.

Expressing his weariness, Jon Anik explained,

“I am growing tired of this MMA space a little bit, and just the morass of negativity when there is a close fight.” He acknowledged the passionate fanbase but lamented the increasing malice and disrespect he faced, particularly after contentious match outcomes.

Despite advice to ignore negative comments, Anik, responsible for conveying accurate MMA information, found it challenging not to respond. The constant barrage of antagonistic comments has prompted him to consider a shift in career, contemplating the possibility of transitioning to pro football where he may not face the same level of negativity.

Anik, who takes pride in being an accessible conduit for fans, shared his struggle with sifting through overwhelmingly negative comments, making him question the longevity of his career in the MMA space. He noted, “So I guess maybe my thesis statement should be if you see me disengage and not be as omnipresent and as accessible on [social media], it’s because the fan base is starting to turn me off.”

Despite acknowledging the suggestion to avoid engaging with negative comments, Jon Anik questioned the notion that he and his colleagues were dismissive of fan opinions. He argued against biased judgment in fights and concluded by hinting at a potential departure by stating, “But those of you suggesting that there’s any bias, or you don’t like me, well, you’ll probably get your f****** wish come 2026 because honestly, at this point, I’ve had it.”
