Gabriel Braga made a poignant return to the ring at 2024 PFL 3, competing for the first time since the tragic death of his father. Despite the emotional challenges he faced, Braga emerged victorious in a thrilling encounter.
In a decisive moment during Round 1, Braga (13-1) unleashed a powerful punching combination that stunned his opponent, Justin Gonzales (14-4), ultimately leading to a knockout just as the clock hit the 4:59 mark. This impressive victory at Wintrust Arena in Chicago earned Braga six valuable points in the 2024 featherweight regular season standings.
The fight marked Braga’s first appearance since the loss of his father, Diego, who tragically passed away in Brazil earlier in the year. Reports revealed that Diego was murdered by a drug gang while searching for a stolen motorcycle. Diego had played a pivotal role in his son’s career, serving as both head coach and mentor. Making his loss deeply felt by Gabriel on a personal and professional level. In February, Gabriel withdrew from a scheduled fight against Bellator champion Patricio Freire on weigh-ins day. Citing that he wasn’t mentally prepared to compete.
With this emotional victory, Braga’s record in PFL now stands at 5-1, with two victories by strikes. On the other hand, Justin Gonzales, making his PFL debut after transitioning from Bellator. Faced defeat and extended his losing streak to three fights.
