Britain’s Sandy Ryan is set to defend her WBO welterweight title against American Mikaela Mayer on September 27 at Madison Square Garden Theater in New York. This fight will be Ryan’s third title defense and marks her second time defending her belt in the United States.
Ryan, who has lost only once in her nine-fight career, expressed her intention to let her “boxing do the talking” in the ring. “It’s the perfect moment in my career, and I’m looking forward to successfully defending my world title,” she stated. Ryan is confident in her abilities, promising that “on a level playing field, nobody is taking this belt from me.”
Ryan’s last fight in the US ended in a controversial draw against Jessica McCaskill, where she missed the chance to unify the division. Promoter Bob Arum highlighted the significance of the upcoming match, stating, “Mikaela Mayer always wants to fight the best, and Sandy Ryan is an elite welterweight.” He emphasized that both fighters are among the best pound-for-pound in the world, and the winner will claim dominance in the 147-pound category.
Mayer, a former unified world champion at super-featherweight, has faced mixed results since moving up in weight, including a controversial points loss to IBF champion Natasha Jonas in January. She seeks to regain her footing as she fights on home soil for the first time since 2022.
