Grand Slam Champions: Djokovic, Court Lead the All-Time Race as Tennis Legends Chase History

The 2024 Grand Slam season has come to a close, crowning new champions in both men’s and women’s tennis. Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz split the major titles in the men’s circuit, while Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, and Barbora Krejcikova emerged victorious in the women’s tournaments. For the first time since 2017, Novak Djokovic ended the year without a Grand Slam title, leaving tennis fans to wonder about the all-time Grand Slam standings.

Here’s a look at the record holders in men’s and women’s tennis, and where Djokovic stands in the history of the sport.

Djokovic and Court Share the Overall Lead

Despite a title-less year, Novak Djokovic remains tied with Margaret Court for the most Grand Slam titles in tennis history, with both standing at 24 majors. Djokovic’s latest win was at the 2023 US Open, and his next opportunity to set a new record will be at the Australian Open in January 2025, where he has already won 10 times.

Court’s dominance also came at her home Slam, the Australian Open, where she triumphed 11 times.

Djokovic Surpasses Nadal and Federer

It wasn’t long ago that Djokovic trailed both Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer in the Grand Slam race. However, seven major titles since the beginning of 2021 have propelled Djokovic to the top. His win at Wimbledon in 2021 saw him surpass Federer’s tally of 20 titles, and his triumph at the 2023 French Open placed him ahead of Nadal’s 22.

Pete Sampras ranks fourth on the men’s all-time list with 14 majors, followed by Roy Emerson with 12.

Among the next generation of players, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner seem poised to challenge the leaderboard. Alcaraz currently holds three majors, and Sinner has two.

Serena Williams Just Shy of Court’s Record

Serena Williams remains one title short of tying Margaret Court’s all-time record. Williams won her 23rd Grand Slam at the 2017 Australian Open while pregnant but was unable to capture another major upon her return, despite reaching four finals in 2018 and 2019.

Williams’ dominance is spread across all surfaces, with seven titles each at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, six at the US Open, and three at the French Open.

Looking Ahead

With the 2024 season wrapped up, all eyes are on the upcoming Australian Open, where Novak Djokovic will aim to break the tie with Margaret Court and claim his 25th Grand Slam title. Meanwhile, new challengers like Alcaraz and Sinner, and women’s stars like Swiatek, are eager to add to their growing tallies and etch their names into the history books.

The 2024 Grand Slam season set the stage for an exciting new chapter in tennis as both established champions and emerging talent continue to push the boundaries of the sport.
