Luis Nunez Faces Tough Return Against Leonardo Baez on “Wednesday Night Fights”

Dominican featherweight Luis Nunez is making a bold return to the ring after an 18-month hiatus, facing Mexico’s Leonardo Baez in what promises to be a challenging bout on “Wednesday Night Fights.” The clash is set to take place at the ProBox TV Events Center in Plant City, Florida, and marks Nunez’s reentry into a competitive division without the comfort of a tune-up fight.

Nunez, 25, boasts an unbeaten record of 19-0 (13 KOs) and last fought in April 2023, where he secured a unanimous decision victory over previously undefeated Christian Olivo Barreda. Despite his extended layoff, Nunez is eager to test himself against a worthy adversary.

“He didn’t want a gimme fight,” said Bob Santos, Nunez’s trainer. “He wants challenges, and on ProBox, there’s no such thing as an easy fight.”

His opponent, Leonardo Baez, returns after a three-year break but remains a formidable contender. With a professional record of 21-5 (12 KOs), Baez demonstrated his resilience by going the distance with former world champion Rey Vargas in his last fight.

“Anybody who can go the distance with Rey Vargas is pretty solid,” Santos said. “Baez isn’t coming to lay down for anybody. We’ll be ready, and I’m confident Nunez will come out victorious.”

Beyond this fight, Nunez’s reputation extends outside the ring. He played a crucial role in reviving the career of fellow Dominican fighter Jeison Rosario, a former unified junior middleweight champion. Rosario’s resurgence under Santos’ guidance has paved the way for high-profile opportunities, including an upcoming bout with Jesus Ramos Jr.

For Nunez, however, Wednesday night is about reclaiming his momentum and proving his worth in the featherweight division.

“After a year-and-a-half off, many fighters would take an easy tune-up fight,” Santos noted. “Not Nunez. He’s going straight into a tough bout. After this, I’ll put him in with any of the champions at 126 pounds.”

Nunez’s fight against Baez underscores his ambition to climb the ranks and compete for a world title. As the action unfolds, fans can expect a statement performance from a fighter determined to make up for lost time.
