Johnny Nelson: Tyson Fury’s Defeat to Oleksandr Usyk Not Down to Corner, But Underestimation of Opponent

Former world champion Johnny Nelson has weighed in on Tyson Fury’s loss to Oleksandr Usyk, asserting that the blame does not lie with Fury’s corner, but rather with the champions underestimation of his opponent.

Nelson, who has previously sparred with Fury, rejected the notion that multiple voices in Fury’s corner had any significant impact on the fight’s outcome. He recalled a previous sparring session where Fury’s father, John Fury, had been vocal from ringside, but Fury, known for his strong personality, handled the situation with ease.

“Tyson’s used to that. It’s no big deal,” Nelson said. “I remember him turning to his dad during a sparring session and saying, ‘You get in the ring and spar with him.’ It’s part of Tyson’s character.”

Instead, Nelson pointed to Fury’s failure to fully respect Usyk’s capabilities. The undefeated heavyweight champion, typically a dominant force who intimidates his opponents, was unable to break Usyk’s resilience and psychological strength. Nelson believes Fury’s usual tactics of undermining or attempting to befriend his adversaries didn’t work with Usyk, who stood firm in the face of Fury’s mind games.

“Usyk was having none of it, and that’s where Tyson struggled. It was lost in translation,” Nelson said. “He underestimated the man in front of him.”

The former champion also emphasized the need for Fury to display discipline in future bouts. He pointed out that Fury’s success often comes from using his jab and switching seamlessly between orthodox and southpaw stances. Despite Fury’s natural skill and versatility, Nelson believes that the loss stemmed from Fury not bringing his best to the ring.

“The first fight was an opportunity to bring your A-game. Fury probably admits he took it lightly, and that was a fatal mistake,” Nelson added.

Nelson, who initially believed Fury would overpower Usyk, acknowledged the Ukrainian’s remarkable ability. Usyk has proven himself to be the best of his generation, consistently defeating the top contenders in the division.

“Usyk’s proved himself the best of his generation because he’s beaten the best in the world. He keeps doing it, and you’ve got to give the man credit,” Nelson concluded.

As the heavyweight division continues to evolve, Usyk’s victory over Fury has cemented his place as one of the sport’s elite fighters, with many now looking forward to a potential rematch.
