Oscar Piastri Confident He Has What It Takes to Challenge for F1 Title

Oscar Piastri believes he is now equipped with everything he needs to challenge for the Formula 1 world championship, but acknowledges that consistency will be key to making that a reality.

The Australian driver, who secured his first grand prix wins with McLaren, played an integral role in the team’s first constructors’ championship since 1998. However, Piastri finished the season 82 points behind his teammate, Lando Norris, and 145 points adrift of eventual title winner Max Verstappen. These gaps sparked scrutiny of McLaren’s team orders and raised questions about their internal dynamics.

Despite this, Piastri’s clear improvement between his rookie year and sophomore season has fueled optimism for his future. Asked about his potential to challenge for the F1 title, Piastri was confident, telling AS/MS: “I think so, yes. I’ve still got some learning and improving to do, but I feel like now I’m getting to a stage where I have almost all the tools I need.”

Reflecting on his progress, Piastri added, “Last year, I didn’t have all the tools. I had some, but not everything. This year, I feel I have a lot more, whether that’s race pace, qualifying, or racing against others. I’ve shown strong performances across the board, and I’m generally very happy with my progress.”

Piastri also highlighted how competing at the front of the grid exposes any flaws more than when racing from further back, saying, “When you’re at the front, any areas where you can’t perform perfectly become more visible. That’s the challenge now – to put it all together consistently.”

Ultimately, Piastri feels he has the necessary tools to succeed, with the next step being the ability to deploy them consistently across all races. With his growth and determination, he could well be a serious contender for the championship in the near future.
