The post-race debrief is a crucial process for any Formula 1 team, and Williams Racing is no exception. Team Principal James Vowles recently provided an in-depth look into how the team analyzes their performance after each race weekend during an episode of The Vowles Verdict, presented by Kraken.
After every race, Williams Racing conducts a thorough analysis of the data collected throughout the weekend. Vowles shared that the team examines specific areas of the data to evaluate various aspects of the car’s performance.
“During the race, we gather between 30,000-50,000 channels of data, which we process and review,” Vowles explained. “We don’t analyze all of them, but we focus on a subset related to the cars, drivers, and tires. Different team members specialize in different areas, allowing us to make live adjustments during the race.”
This real-time data analysis is essential for making immediate corrections, such as adjusting driving style to optimize tire performance or refining racing line and gear usage. However, the analysis doesn’t end there. The team continues to delve into the data to inform improvements for future races.
Vowles emphasized that the process begins the moment the race starts. “From the second the lights go off, we start looking at the data and begin the learning process. Even by the time we conduct the post-race debrief, we’ve already reviewed a significant amount of data and can provide initial feedback.”
The post-race debrief involves input from both engineers and drivers. Engineers first provide feedback on the car’s balance, changes made during the race, and any issues encountered, whether related to performance or reliability. The drivers then share their perspectives, highlighting what worked well, what didn’t, and areas for improvement.
Vowles noted that the debrief isn’t about assigning blame. “Our focus isn’t on pointing out mistakes; that’s not the culture we have at Williams. Instead, it’s about asking, ‘How do we go quicker?’ It’s a question that drives deeper discussions on car setup, development, and tire usage, with implications for the entire season.”
The analysis doesn’t stop with the immediate post-race debrief. Additional discussions take place in the days following the race. Where the team reviews each aspect of their performance in greater detail.
“These further forums typically occur on the Monday after the race and later in the week, depending on the race schedule,” Vowles continued. “We review strategy, reliability, and performance, sharing our learnings with the entire team. It’s an open forum where everyone can contribute, ensuring we learn and improve together.”
Through this comprehensive debrief process, Williams Racing continually refines their approach, striving for better performance throughout the season.
