George Russell attributes his dominant performance over Lewis Hamilton in Formula 1 2024 qualifying to being “psychologically in a really good place.” The 26-year-old emerged with a commanding 24-6 qualifying record against his former Mercedes teammate, a stark improvement from their 2022 and 2023 qualifying results, where Russell trailed Hamilton 8-12 and 13-15, respectively.
In the 2024 season, George Russell not only outpaced Hamilton in qualifying but also led him in the points standings, with both drivers securing two wins apiece. Russell’s performance, which was hindered by a post-race weight infringement at the Belgian Grand Prix, could have been even stronger, as he had an additional win taken away.
Reflecting on his success in the 2024 season, particularly at the Abu Dhabi finale, Russell stated, “I just feel really confident within the car, confident within myself. Psychologically, I’m in a really good place, especially when it comes to high-pressure situations where I need to get the most out of myself.”
Russell also noted that his growth over the course of the season has been pivotal. With Hamilton’s future at Mercedes uncertain as he prepares to join Ferrari for 2025, Russell took on a leadership role within the team and entered the season with a renewed sense of purpose.
“When the pressure’s up, and it comes down to that one lap in Q3, it really comes down to your headspace,” he said. “I feel like I’ve learned a lot about myself and how to get the most out of myself, and I know what works for me.”
