This left him exposed to both Perez and Sainz, culminating in a three-way fight that ended with Sainz crashing into the walls. Leclerc secured second place but faced significant challenges.

Leclerc’s Comments
Leclerc cited two main issues: delayed tyre warming and underestimated McLaren’s straight-line speed. He acknowledged that better tyre management and a more aggressive approach might have changed the outcome. The team aims to improve for the Singapore race.

Sainz’s DNF
Carlos Sainz expressed frustration over his crash with Perez, which ended his race prematurely. He believed a strong finish was possible and emphasized the need to focus on the next race.

Vasseur’s Analysis

He was set for fifth until the late crash involving Sainz and Perez, which unexpectedly promoted him to the podium. Despite struggling on medium tyres initially, Russell’s performance improved significantly in the final laps.

Hamilton’s Recovery
Lewis Hamilton, who began from the pit lane due to new power unit components, faced a tough race. He fought through the midfield and managed to gain positions, including a late pass on Bearman. Hamilton’s performance benefitted from the late crash, earning additional points for the team.

Wolff’s Comments
Toto Wolff acknowledged the unexpected podium finish but noted that Mercedes’ pace was more aligned with fifth place. He highlighted Russell’s strong second stint and Hamilton’s efforts despite traffic. The team will focus on improving car balance and performance ahead of the Singapore race.

Shovlin noted that Mercedes’ overall pace was insufficient and stressed the importance of resolving these issues for Singapore.

Red Bull’s Baku Race Review

Perez’s Performance
Sergio Perez started strongly, overtaking Sainz and holding third place for most of the race. He pressed Leclerc for second but fell to fourth after a failed move. Verstappen’s Challenge
Max Verstappen struggled with car balance issues throughout the race. After initially passing Russell, he lost ground to the Mercedes and Norris, finishing fifth. Verstappen noted that recent car changes negatively impacted performance, and he felt the team’s adjustments did not pay off.

Horner’s Comments
Christian Horner expressed disappointment over Perez’s collision and the resulting damage. He acknowledged the impact on both drivers and the Constructors’ Championship. Horner highlighted that while Perez was in a strong position, both the incident and Verstappen’s struggles with the car setup led to a significant loss of points. The team will review and address these issues as they prepare for future races.

Pirelli’s Baku Race Summary

Mario Isola, Motorsport Director

v

“After a thrilling Italian Grand Prix, we enjoyed another exciting race in Baku. Unlike Monza, where two different strategies emerged, nearly all drivers opted for similar tyre choices here. This did not lessen the excitement, as we witnessed intense battles for the lead and throughout the field.

“For this weekend and the upcoming race, we used the same dry compounds, which performed as expected. The Soft tyre was ideal for qualifying, while the Hard proved quickest in the race. The Medium tyre offered a balanced option for the early laps, and our predictions held true.

“The track continued to improve with more rubber down, leading to better lap times and limited degradation. While some drivers experienced graining, it didn’t significantly impact their performance. Managing tyres in traffic remains a challenge, given the current aerodynamic configurations.”
