During his first Formula 1 season, McLaren’s rookie driver Oscar Piastri stresses resilience and fair competition to peers.
In his debut F1 season, Piastri earned praise for winning the Qatar sprint race, showcasing unwavering prowess in battles.
Piastri’s interactions with drivers stood out – George Russell received a penalty for leaving the track while overtaking Piastri. Similarly, Yuki Tsunoda spun in Mexico after a maneuver to pass around the outside.
In an interview with Motorsport.com, the ex-FIA F2 and F3 champion emphasized proving himself to rivals despite limited top-tier experience.
Piastri responded, “Not so much,” when asked if he felt underestimated by his peers. He emphasized racing hard but fairly as an essential aspect, particularly early in his career, to dispel any notion of being easily overpowered.
“At the beginning of the season or beginning of your career, it’s always important to show it to people that you’re not a pushover because it’s not a nice thing to have,” Piastri stated.
Reflecting on his on-track demeanor, Piastri expressed a balanced approach, avoiding excessive aggression – a characteristic that had been instrumental in his successes climbing the junior single-seater ladder.
“I don’t think I’m overly harsh or aggressive or anything like that,” he added. “A big element of my championships was from staying out of trouble and being consistent.”
Piastri stressed the importance of finishing races and maintaining a level-headed approach even in challenging situations, citing that completing a race outweighs being right but forced out of contention.
Throughout his rookie campaign, Piastri did not incur any FIA superlicence penalty points, affirming his commitment to fair racing.
