Mercedes has faced a challenging start to the 2024 Formula 1 season, encountering inconsistency with its W15 car’s performance across race weekends.
Lewis Hamilton and George Russell have struggled with a ‘knife-edge’ feeling at times, as the team grapples with finding an optimal setup to unlock the car’s potential.
While Mercedes anticipates an aerodynamic upgrade package for the upcoming Miami race to boost overall performance, the team is also planning additional changes to address the car’s handling issues in the coming races.
James Allison, Mercedes’ technical director, acknowledged the need for improvements, particularly in rectifying the car’s underlying balance problem.
“We’ve got upgrade packages coming to the car, as well as components aimed at addressing the underlying balance issues,” Allison explained in the team’s post-race debrief following the Chinese Grand Prix.

Despite delivering a double points finish in China, Allison admitted that Mercedes fell short of its performance expectations, citing a persistent front-limited car characteristic, especially in low-speed corners.
He highlighted the challenge of managing front tyre grip, which impacts corner exit and rear tyre temperatures, ultimately compromising overall lap time.
Looking ahead to the Miami race, Allison emphasized the importance of refining the car’s setup and optimizing mid-weekend adjustments to achieve better performance in qualifying and the main race.
He stressed the need for a proactive approach, aiming to strike the right balance between ambition and practicality in setup changes during sprint and main races.
With competition intensifying and small margins making a significant difference, Mercedes aims to make substantial improvements to stay competitive in the closely contested F1 field.
