McLaren remains optimistic that recent upgrades to its MCL38 Formula 1 car, which have boosted performance in low-speed corners, will not compromise its competitiveness on high-speed tracks like Barcelona.
Historically strong in high-speed corners, McLaren’s 2024 challenger has shown significant gains in low-speed agility following upgrades introduced at Miami. This shift in performance characteristics initially raised concerns about potential trade-offs between low and high-speed performance, a critical balance in Formula 1.
As the team prepares for the Spanish Grand Prix, traditionally a medium to high-speed circuit, McLaren’s driver Oscar Piastri expressed confidence despite acknowledging advancements made by rival teams like Red Bull.
“I think we can still be confident,” Piastri commented. “I wouldn’t say we’re weak in high speed, it’s just that others have probably caught up a little bit. I’m pretty confident we’ll be somewhere towards the front as well.”
McLaren’s team principal, Andrea Stella, highlighted the team’s cautious approach in revealing specific details behind their performance gains, aiming to maintain a competitive edge over rivals.
“We are starting to understand that some of the developments we’ve worked on have unlocked crucial aspects of the car’s behavior, particularly beneficial in low-speed corners,” Stella noted. “While we won’t divulge specifics to our competitors, this progress is encouraging as we continue to explore further updates for this season and beyond.”
With McLaren leading in points across the last three races, outscoring Red Bull and Ferrari, Piastri believes the team is well-positioned to challenge for the championship despite the initial advantage held by Red Bull.
“It’ll be tough, definitely, but I think we’re in the fight,” Piastri added. “We’ve been very consistent across different circuits and have shown strength at all of them. Little improvements will be crucial in the championship battle, and the focus is on maximizing performance for the remainder of the season.
McLaren’s optimism heading into the Spanish Grand Prix underscores their determination to maintain competitiveness across varied track conditions and further enhance their championship prospects.
